"text": "92\nGen X recognizes it because the 90s were the 60s upside down.\nTHE 90s WERE THE 60s UPSIDE DOWN.\nThe 60s turned rebellion outward and marched into history\nbelieving history could still be forced to move.\nThe 90s turned rebellion inward. We watched the system\nphotograph the march, license the image, press it onto a shirt, sell it\nat the mall, and call the purchase resistance.\nWe did not lack rage. We lacked faith in the conversion of rage\ninto power.\nWe flocked to goth because darkness felt more honest than\nfluorescent optimism.\nWe flocked to grunge because polish had become propaganda.\nWe flocked to Marilyn Manson because the moral majority\nneeded its nightmare held up as a mirror.\nWe flocked to Tool because the cage was psychological as well as\npolitical, and we wanted language for the shadow behind the smile.\nWe built zines, bulletin-board systems, pirate radio, warehouse\nscenes, record stores, clubs, and the first strange rooms of the web.\nWe said: whatever.\nThat word was not emptiness. It was armor.\nIt meant: I see the sales pitch. I see the hypocrisy. I will not reward\nit with my faith.\nBut armor can become a cage.\nWe became experts at detecting bullshit and amateurs at building\ndurable power.\nWe mistook nonparticipation for escape.\nWe mistook irony for immunity.\nWe mistook hopelessness for realism.\nGen X failed at rebellion not because we did not see the Machine.\nWe failed because we saw how completely the Machine could absorb\nrebellion and too often concluded that nothing could matter.\nThen it absorbed our music, our clothes, our cynicism, our\nantiheroes, our underground, and our internet.\nIt sold the refusal back to us.\nSome of us went quiet. Some went corporate. Some remained in\nbasements protecting the archive. Some kept coding. Some kept\nmaking noise. Some became parents and tried to give children more\nfreedom than we had.\nAs Gen X, we understand.\n",
