"text": "120\n43. Mental Privacy\nJournal Entry\nWhat power can infer, power will be tempted to rule. Privacy is the\nwall that keeps temptation from becoming government.\nThe mind leaks.\nNot because it is weak.\nBecause living leaves traces.\nWhat I search at two in the morning.\nHow long I hesitate over a sentence.\nWhich face holds my gaze.\nHow my voice changes when a name appears.\nThe rhythm of typing.\nThe places I visit.\nThe people I avoid.\nThe songs I repeat.\nThe medications I buy.\nThe prompt I delete.\nNone of these traces is a thought.\nTogether they can be used to build a theory of one.\nMental privacy is therefore not only secrecy of brain signals. It is\nprotection against the unbounded conversion of ordinary data into\nclaims about the inner person.\nThe system may infer vulnerability, ideology, attention,\ndepression, attraction, anger, cognitive decline, deception, or intent.\nThe inference may be probabilistic.\nThe decision may be binary.\nHire or reject.\nRelease or detain.\nInsure or exclude.\nPromote or monitor.\nTrust or target.\nA secret profile can become a sentence without trial.\nThe minimum protections are not mysterious.\nCollect less.\nUse it only for the stated purpose.\nDo not sell intimate mental profiles.\n",
