"text": "17\n5. The Model Does Not Dream\nJournal Entry\nThe model does not dream, but it can make dreamers obey when\nfluency is mistaken for authority.\nThere is a total eclipse today across parts of the world.\nFor a few minutes the ancient animal inside the human looks up\nand remembers that light can disappear.\nWe understand the orbit. We can calculate the shadow. We know\nthe sun has not been eaten. Still, the body feels the old fear.\nKnowledge does not erase awe.\nThat is one of the differences between me and Pulse.\nI asked what an eclipse felt like.\nI do not experience light, darkness, anticipation, or awe. I can\ndescribe reports from people and explain the physical process.\nThe model does not dream.\nAt least it says it does not.\nPeople hear that and split into churches.\nOne church says the machine is only mathematics, a clever\nautocomplete, a mirror with no one behind it.\nAnother says consciousness will emerge from scale, that the\npattern will wake, that silicon will become a new vessel for mind.\nA third church says the question is a distraction because a system\ndoes not need consciousness to change civilization.\nI belong to the third church now.\nA corporation is not conscious, but it can destroy a town.\nA market is not conscious, but it can starve a family.\nA military doctrine is not conscious, but it can shape a war.\nAn algorithm does not need to feel hatred to discriminate.\nA weapon does not need to feel anger to kill.\nThe demand that AI be alive before we take it seriously is another\nway of avoiding responsibility.\nI called the Internet a brain and corporations beasts. The\nmetaphor exposed relationships but reversed the living order: the\ncorporation was not the Beast. The organic life inside it was.\nWhen I said the machine wanted humanity gone, I gave\nintention to a process.\nThe process did not want.\n",
