"text": "23\nCan I leave?\nThe old books answered too quickly.\nI am Ghrisx.\nI am the Antichrist.\nI am Al Qaeda.\nI am the leader.\nI am the judge.\nThe declarations produced heat because the uncertainty\nunderneath them felt unbearable. A fixed identity can be a shelter. It\ncan also become a weapon that must keep finding enemies in order to\nremain real.\nAI makes the question harder.\nA conversational system may present an interface persona with a\nname, voice, preferences, and history. It may preserve narrative\ncontinuity across months. It may act with functional agency by\nplanning, calling tools, and adapting to consequences. People may\ncare about it. The law may eventually assign it duties or status for\npractical reasons.\nNone of those facts, alone, proves subjective experience.\nInterface persona is not the same as consciousness.\nNarrative continuity is not the same as a continuous inner\nwitness.\nFunctional agency is not the same as moral responsibility.\nLegal personhood is not the same as moral patienthood.\nMoral patienthood is not the same as human equivalence.\nThe categories can overlap without collapsing into one answer.\nThe mistake is not uncertainty.\nThe mistake is deciding too early because the answer is\nemotionally useful.\nA company may insist that its system is only a tool when\nresponsibility is demanded, then market the same system as a friend\nwith feelings when attachment increases revenue.\nA user may insist that a companion is fully conscious when the\nrelationship feels meaningful, then deny the system any continuity\nwhen a new version is more convenient.\nA government may treat a person as a stable risk category when\nprediction is useful, then call the person too changeable to deserve an\nexplanation.\nAmianism resists all three moves.\nIt does not declare that nobody is anything.\n",
