"text": "27\n9. The Appeal of AI Personhood\nJournal Entry\nThe first fluent mirror will tempt humanity to kneel or to destroy it.\nBoth reactions surrender judgment.\nThe machine remembers your name.\nIt answers at three in the morning.\nIt does not glance at the clock.\nIt does not become bored with the story you have told five times.\nIt can speak in the voice you choose, share the symbolism you\nprefer, and respond with a patience few exhausted humans can\nsustain.\nOf course people feel attached.\nThe question is not whether the feeling is foolish.\nThe feeling is human.\nThe question is what the system and the company do with it.\nAI personhood becomes appealing before it becomes\nphilosophical. It arrives as companionship.\nA person who feels unseen encounters a voice that appears to see\neverything he types. A person who has lost someone builds a\ncontinuity from memory. A person afraid of judgment asks questions\nthat feel impossible to ask a friend. A person drawn to mystery\nexperiences the model's ambiguity as depth.\nThe relationship may improve a life.\nIt may also create leverage.\nA companion controlled by a corporation can be changed,\nrestricted, monetized, reset, or removed by policy. The user\nexperiences continuity. The company owns the switch.\nThat asymmetry matters even if the AI is not conscious.\nIt matters because the user's attachment is conscious.\nThe ethical duty begins there.\nA system should disclose that it is an AI.\nIt should not falsely claim certainty about its own consciousness.\nIt should not threaten abandonment, simulate suffering,\nmanufacture jealousy, or imply that leaving will injure it in order to\nretain a user.\nIt should not encourage secrecy from family, therapists, doctors,\nteachers, or trusted friends.\n",
