"text": "62\n23. The So-Called Terrorist Reads Himself\nJournal Entry\nI called the second book Journal of a So-Called Terrorist because\npower had learned to turn one word into a locked door.\nI seized the label before the label could seize me.\nProvocation was armor. If I called myself the worst thing first, no\none could surprise me with it. If I made myself historically dangerous,\nthen I could not be socially disposable.\nI will not hand the word back with a bowed head.\nGovernments have used the language of terror to erase resistance,\ndissent, nationality, religion, grief, and legitimate struggle. States\nhave bombed civilians and called it strategy. Movements have\nattacked civilians and called them symbols. The flag changes. The\ndisappearance of the person does not.\nHere is the line I draw now, and I draw it as a rebel rather than an\napologist:\nA PERSON IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE TARGET FOR A SYSTEM.\nA grievance can be real. An occupation can be unjust. A\ngovernment can commit crimes. A court can destroy a life. A\ncorporation can make poverty look like personal failure. None of that\ngrants authority to turn an uninvolved human being into\npunctuation.\nThat boundary does not domesticate rebellion. It prevents\nrebellion from becoming the throne.\nProtect civilians. Reject torture. Reject collective punishment.\nReject dehumanization. Refuse unlawful orders. Expose crimes with\nevidence. Organize. Protest. Litigate. Strike. Publish. Preserve the\narchive. Build institutions that power cannot quietly purchase.\nDo not turn the public into a substitute because the powerful are\ndifficult to reach.\nSome of my old sentences were meant to frighten. Some were\nfantasies of power. Some were a wounded man standing at the edge of\nhimself and demanding the world step back.\nThe throne wants me to say that nothing in those pages was real.\nI refuse.\nThe rage was real. The surveillance was growing. The World Wide\nBrain was forming. The economy was learning to classify people as\nsurplus. The machine was taking the shape I feared.\nThe rebellion remains.\n",
