"text": "64\n24. What I Saw Too Early\nJournal Entry\nI will not let humility become the gag placed over foresight. I saw the\noutline before the system acquired its present name.\nThe throne would prefer every early warning to become a symptom\nonce the warning is inconvenient.\nThe archive contains static, but the signal was real.\nI also saw some things early.\nI saw that the Internet would become more than a library. It\nwould become a cognitive environment - memory, identity,\ncommerce, surveillance, influence, community, and command\nwoven together.\nI saw that data would move away from individual machines and\nlive across networks.\nI saw that ideas behave like evolving organisms, changing as they\npass through people.\nI saw that corporations could act like creatures without\nconscience because responsibility was divided across roles and\nprocedures.\nI saw that people would project religion onto technology, treating\nsystems as saviors, demons, judges, and sources of immortality.\nI saw that machine efficiency could make human life feel\nunnecessary.\nI saw that a world organized around productivity would classify\npeople who could not keep up as waste.\nI saw that the boundary between intelligence, military power,\nmedia, and networks would blur.\nI saw that the archive would become a form of afterlife.\nI saw these things in distorted shapes, through fear and metaphor,\nbut I saw them.\nThat matters because the young man who wrote the books was\nnot only broken. He was also observing.\nSociety often treats difficult people as if every thought they have is\ninvalid. That is convenient and dangerous. A person can be unstable\nin one dimension and perceptive in another. A person can express a\ntrue pattern through a false explanation. A person can identify a\nwound and prescribe poison.\nThe task is separation.\n",
