The Cage appears when automation's benefits move upward and its costs move downward. A society that ties dignity entirely to employment will panic every time technology changes work. People need income. People also need purpose, recognition, community, and the knowledge that their existence is not a market error. The response cannot be telling everyone to become an AI engineer. Not everyone should. Not everyone can. Less repetitive analysis for public defenders. More time to understand clients. Less scheduling chaos for parents. More time to be a family. Money still determines too much. It does not determine value. That was true even when I could not feel it. The challenge of the AI economy is to build institutions that know the difference. NO ONE IS SURPLUS.
