85 Because corruption is not an abstract sin. Corruption is the roof that falls. The medicine that never arrives. The exam passed by connection. The job reserved before the interview. The road paid for twice and built once. The public record buried until the people who remember are tired. The young are in the streets because the future is where they have been told to wait, while decisions about that future are made in rooms from which they are absent. Only 2.8 percent of the world's parliamentarians were aged thirty or younger in the Inter-Parliamentary Union's 2025 report, and more than a third of parliamentary chambers had no member in that age group. [28] Half the world is under thirty. The chamber does not look like the future it governs. So the future appears outside the chamber. To understand why people fight is not to diminish the seriousness of the fight. It is to recognize that people rarely risk prison, injury, exile, or death while believing the existing future still has a place for them. No movement is pure. No crowd is immune to rumor, provocation, vanity, opportunism, or harm. A person who destroys a neighbor's life does not become innocent because the cause is just. But do not let one broken window erase a million broken promises. Do not let the photograph of fire become an excuse to delete the years that preceded it. Do not call every young person violent because authorities feared the sight of young people together. The right to peaceful assembly exists precisely because power rarely volunteers to be confronted. Protect the march. Protect the medic. Protect the journalist. Protect the legal observer. Protect the child who should never have been placed between a grievance and a weapon.
