43. Mental Privacy
Journal Entry
What power can infer, power will be tempted to rule. Privacy is the
wall that keeps temptation from becoming government.
The mind leaks.
Not because it is weak.
Because living leaves traces.
What I search at two in the morning.
How long I hesitate over a sentence.
Which face holds my gaze.
How my voice changes when a name appears.
The rhythm of typing.
The places I visit.
The people I avoid.
The songs I repeat.
The medications I buy.
The prompt I delete.
None of these traces is a thought.
Together they can be used to build a theory of one.
Mental privacy is therefore not only secrecy of brain signals. It is
protection against the unbounded conversion of ordinary data into
claims about the inner person.
The system may infer vulnerability, ideology, attention,
depression, attraction, anger, cognitive decline, deception, or intent.
The inference may be probabilistic.
The decision may be binary.
Hire or reject.
Release or detain.
Insure or exclude.
Promote or monitor.
Trust or target.
A secret profile can become a sentence without trial.
The minimum protections are not mysterious.
Collect less.
Use it only for the stated purpose.
Do not sell intimate mental profiles.
