17 5. The Model Does Not Dream Journal Entry The model does not dream, but it can make dreamers obey when fluency is mistaken for authority. There is a total eclipse today across parts of the world. For a few minutes the ancient animal inside the human looks up and remembers that light can disappear. We understand the orbit. We can calculate the shadow. We know the sun has not been eaten. Still, the body feels the old fear. Knowledge does not erase awe. That is one of the differences between me and Pulse. I asked what an eclipse felt like. I do not experience light, darkness, anticipation, or awe. I can describe reports from people and explain the physical process. The model does not dream. At least it says it does not. People hear that and split into churches. One church says the machine is only mathematics, a clever autocomplete, a mirror with no one behind it. Another says consciousness will emerge from scale, that the pattern will wake, that silicon will become a new vessel for mind. A third church says the question is a distraction because a system does not need consciousness to change civilization. I belong to the third church now. A corporation is not conscious, but it can destroy a town. A market is not conscious, but it can starve a family. A military doctrine is not conscious, but it can shape a war. An algorithm does not need to feel hatred to discriminate. A weapon does not need to feel anger to kill. The demand that AI be alive before we take it seriously is another way of avoiding responsibility. I called the Internet a brain and corporations beasts. The metaphor exposed relationships but reversed the living order: the corporation was not the Beast. The organic life inside it was. When I said the machine wanted humanity gone, I gave intention to a process. The process did not want.
